The Hummer actually has less of an ecological footprint than the Toyota Prius? Come to find out this bias was because of a research report sensationalized by the media, but not backed by professional research and peer review. The argument against the Prius was in regards to how long it lasts compared to the Hummer, which clearly makes sense on the surface- if a car that runs on less fuel still contains materials that are not healthy for the environment and will make their way to a dumping ground more quickly, then yes, it would be a larger ecological footprint. However, current research shows that the too-quick-to report information was biased and politically motivated. Information was omitted or withheld as well.
The following link discusses the background information in more depth. I would like to say that it surprises me that people lie using statistics, but that would be a complete lie within itself! It happens on a daily basis and in places we rarely expect.
